The Disability Discrimination Act 1995
classes everyone, with few exceptions, who provides a service
to the
public, as a service provider. |
| |
As such they have a duty to consider making
reasonable adjustments to policies, practices and procedures
and
to provide auxiliary aids or services, where these would aid access
for disabled people. From 1st October 2004
anyone providing a service will have to address any
physical features that make it difficult
for disabled people to use
their services. |
| |
The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) is a
law that "makes" it unlawful for disabled people to be
discriminated
against (discrimination against disabled people) by a
service provider. These include a
company, companies or
businesses, an employer, in education and the NHS. |
| |
Discrimination is said to be where a disabled
person is treated less favourably, without justification, for a
reason
relating to their disability as compared with someone without their
disability. It is also defined in the
Disability
Discrimination Act as a failure to make "reasonable
adjustments" for a disabled person that
cannot be justified. |
